Import Retention Labels to M365 Compliance Center

Modified on Sun, 5 Feb, 2023 at 9:35 AM

Currently, there is no integration between Taxonomy App and M365 Compliance Center.

M365 Retention labels can be exported from Taxonomy app in an Excel format and imported to M365 Compliance Center. Retention labels, after import need to be published through a label policy on this interface https://compliance.microsoft.com/recordsmanagement?viewid=labelpolicies.

Before starting the import make sure to follow the steps in this article to export the M365 retention labels.

When the action at the end of the retention period is "Change retention label", the replacement label must already be in the system for the import to succeed, this is why multiple export files are provided in a zip file to complete the import. The zip file includes the following instructions on how to import the retention labels.

1. Navigate to the Compliance Center and login.(https://compliance.microsoft.com/recordsmanagement?viewid=fileplan)
2. Import all the replacement retention files from the folder "ReplacementRetentionLabels" in the predefined order.
3. Once all the replacement labels are imported - at last import the RetentionLabels.csv file

Below are the steps to import retention labels from an excel spreadsheet.

1.  Navigate to your Compliance Center > Records Management > File plan.

https://compliance.microsoft.com/recordsmanagement?viewid=fileplan

The Records Management / File Plan page is displayed.

2.  Click Import.

The Complete and import your file plan pane is displayed.

3.  Click Upload a file.

The Open dialog is displayed.

4.  Select the Excel spreadsheet exported from the Taxonomy App.

In case the exported file is a zip file, follow the instructions in the zip file documentation to import the retention labels.

5.  Click Open.

The successfully imported pane is displayed.

6.  Click Done.

The retention labels are successfully imported.  You can similarly add more retention labels
