To avoid depending on end users to select a value for a metadata, it is possible to apply a default value at the library level which makes it inherited by the content added below.
Follow the steps below to apply a default value to a library column.
1. Navigate to the Document Library you wish to set a default value to a site column.
The selected document library is displayed.
2. Click the icon.
The Settings dropdown list is displayed.
3. Click Library settings.
The Library settings pane is displayed.
3. Click More library settings.
The document library Settings page is displayed.
4. Click Column default value settings.
The Settings > Change Default Column Values page is displayed.
5. Click File Classification.
The File Classification dialog is displayed.
6. Choose the option Use this default value.
7. Click icon to select a default value from the dropdown list.
The related dropdown list is displayed.
8. Select the value you wish to set as default.
9. Click Select.
10. Click Ok.
11. Click Ok.
The selected value is set as the default value for the column.
Note: Any document you add in the future to this library will get the default value set to it for file classification.
